All Things Southern

Welcome to the South's favorite front porch.

Well, the Thanksgiving memories went so well, let's try for Christmas memories.

My favorite Christmas memories go back to actually Thanksgiving in Atlanta when my mother's father was alive. We would go downtown that night for the lighting of Rich's Great Tree, which sat on the top of the overpass between the two stores over Forsyth Street. The four glass overpasses held a different church choir with stained glass stencils on the windows at each end per floor. Also, each level would light up in red, green, blue and gold as the choir sang before singing in union as the tree lights came on. It was breath-taking.

The next day, Rich's toy department would open with Santa and real reindeer. Also, the Pink Pig monorail took excited children for a ride over the toy department (later the ride was moved to the roof outside and beside the Great Tree...real scary).

Now, the Pink Pig is a smaller ride on the ground at Macy's at Lenox Square. It's not the same for me, but it is creating new memories for Georgia's children.

Joyce, What wonderful memories! I grew up in Suffolk, Virginia. A local business, Coleman Nursery, had a traditional Christmas exhibit that was quite spectacular. It is no longer there and I don't know what happened to the exhibit. We always went Christmas caroling at least once. The Christmas Pageant at church was always a hoot. When we were really lucky, the weather was cold enough to skate on the pond in our neighborhood. That was so fun!

Last night, my Bible study got together for our annual Christmas Party. We have a wonderful dinner at one of our members homes, have an ornament exchange and sing Christmas carols! It is such a wonderful tradition that really sets the tone for the holiday season for me. This weekend, we have two neighborhood Christmas parties that we attend every year. It is a great time to catch up with our neighbors who we do not see very often even though we live on the same street!

Totally sweet, Joyce! I enjoyed "seeing" your memories thru your little girl eyes. I could see a little red-haired girl soaking it all in.

I know this is supposed to be fun memories but if I may chase a rabbit, I think I will post a pic of me just for fun at one of my least favorite Christmas moments. Can I do this here? Let me try.

Yep! That's me-- about to call Ralph on Christmas Day because of the over-indulgence of the Christmas candy the evening before. I wanted to stay in bed but nothing doing for Mama. In case you don't see it, I am smiling for the camera.

Laura Beth-- We're about to do that, now. I've got to get to the kitchen and finish dropping my bonbons in the melted choco! Great recipe. I think it's on the porch this week-- no, it's the next. That's right. Y'all have got to try 'em. They are to die for!
